On Saturday, 4 July 2020, Joseph Munzhedzi Tshiwilowilo, a SAIPA stalwart and Professional Accountant (SA) since 2003, a loving husband and father suddenly passed away at age 64.

JMT, as he was fondly known, hailed from humble beginnings in Venda, diligently working his way to becoming one of the best-known Professional Accountants in South Africa and further afield. JMT was also an Associate General Accountant (SA) AGA(SA) with SAICA and a Certified Business Advisor (CBA) with IBASA. In 2006, ABASA recommended him to serve on the SAIPA board, a role he fulfilled with great aplomb, distinguishing himself as highly knowledgeable about the post 1994 reality. In 2008, he was elected as the second Chairman of SAIPA, becoming the first Black South African to lead the organisation. As a former President and CEO of IBASA, he played an important role in championing the SMME sector and promoting entrepreneurship.

JMT worked in Corporate SA for twenty years before establishing his own Accounting Firm JMT Executive Tax and Accounting Services CC in the year 2000, in Vosloorus Ekurhuleni. In the twenty years as the Managing Member of JMT, he also served on the Board of SAIPA as a Board Member, Member of the Investigation Committee, Chaired the Transformation and Growth Committee, Executive Committee and Chairman of the Board.

He has also served as a Member of the AGA(SA) Committee at SAICA and served as Chief Executive Officer, Stakeholder Relations and Chairman of the Board at IBASA. At his time of passing he had been serving in the Management & Business Services Committee and the Entrepreneurship and Cooperative Development Institute Committee both at the Services SETA.

Shortly before his passing, SAIPA appointed JMT as a Business Advisory Consultant to assist the management of SAIPA in establishing a Business Advisory Unit.

JMT was known to all in SAIPA as one of the most passionate SAIPA members, always willing to serve his fellow members in whatever capacity required of him. Throughout his distinguished life, he was the epitome of humility, always conducting himself in a softly spoken manner that respected the dignity of all with whom he interacted. He exemplified the core qualities of servant leadership, staying true to the related values and norms. For those aspiring to break into and advance in the accounting profession, he was an inspirational role model.

Our thoughts are with his wife, children, and family as they morn his sudden and unexpected passing. His contributions to the accounting profession will always be held in the highest regard amongst all our members and the entire profession. Future generations will hold up his legacy as a defining characteristic to which all SAIPA members should aspire. May he Rest in Peace.
