SAIPA SIGNS MOU WITH CPA IRELAND

September 5th 2011: Reflecting the increasingly international nature of business and best practice which transcends borders, the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA) and the Institute of Certified Public Accountants (CPA) in Ireland have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) detailing increased reciprocation between the respective bodies.

According to SAIPA CEO Mr Shahied Daniels, the bodies which represent accounting professionals will provide service and support to each other's members and collaborate on joint research, education and on other areas of mutual interest.

"We welcome this alliance as a partnership which provides our organisations with opportunities to explore how we can advance the common interests of our members while improving advocacy efforts on behalf of the profession in the international arena."

As one of South Africa's foremost accountancy institutes, SAIPA plays a central role in ensuring that its members are able to optimise their accountancy practices or add value to their employers in the corporate world. By so doing, says Daniels, the Professional Accountant (SA) is empowered to contribute to society and create wealth for the country and its people. "With more than 6000 members in practice, commerce and industry, government and academia, we have an active membership which takes an interest in the direction of accounting and which is cognisant of the international nature of the profession," he notes. "It is for this reason that we see this MOU as another step forward to increase knowledge sharing for the advancement of members and their interests."

He adds that the majority of SAIPA members are in public practice, offering accountancy and allied services, excluding auditing, to the general public and the business community, especially in the SME sector.

Commenting of the agreement CPA CEO Eamonn Siggins says the organisations share common and strong interests, particularly in terms of advancements in the profession. "CPA Ireland and SAIPA are established members of the International Federation of Accountants [IFAC]; the deepening of our relationship gives CPA Ireland a partner in South Africa, a key economy on the African continent and adds considerably to the international footprint of our organisation and members."

Founded in 1949, he reveals that the CPA has some 5000 members who are working in 32 countries around the world. "This demonstrates the value of international relationships with fellow professional bodies; the information and knowledge which will be shared is of consequence, it is relevant and it will help our respective members to improve their performance and ability to add value. We are therefore delighted to partner with SAIPA, one of South Africa's foremost institutes; as such connections create opportunities for CPAs and reinforce the attractiveness of the CPA Ireland qualification internationally."
