Accounting Technicians

SAIPA has recognised the acute shortage of qualified and accredited accounting support staff and was instrumental in introducing the competency-based training (CBET Programme) for Accounting Technicians some years ago. This initiative led to the introduction of the Accounting Technician affiliate within the SAIPA membership structure for routes to membership, which recognise incomplete qualifications and the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) principle.

The admission requirements for the Accounting Technician affiliate fall into THREE categories:

1. Part qualified SAIPA Qualifiers: Registered SAIPA Trainee Accountants on the official SAIPA Learnership programme, who have completed their practical training component but not their full academic studies component, will be accepted without having to do the appropriate Professional Evaluation (PE).

The Institute requires you to have completed at least 50 % of a Degree with the following subjects for Accounting Technician Membership:

  • Financial Accounting 3
  • Taxation 1
  • Auditing 1/ Internal Auditing 2/ Internal Control & Code of Ethics
  • Corporate Law 1/ Commercial Law 2
  • Management Accounting

It is also viewed as a compulsory exit level' for those SAIPA Trainee Accountants affected. They may re-enter the Learnership programme route once academic studies component is completed.

2. Part Qualifiers (other): Applicants who hold only a part academic qualification but have the relevant experience (5 years min) will be required to undergo and be successful in the appropriate Professional Evaluation (PE) before membership will be granted.

3. Experienced Qualifiers: Applicants who hold no academic qualification, but have the relevant practical experience (5 years min), will be required to undergo and be successful in the appropriate Professional Evaluation (PE) before membership will be granted.

Applicants who wish to register under 1 & 2 above need to complete and/or submit the following:

  • A fully completed Accounting Technician application form.
  • Certified copies of subject transcripts for subjects passed and supporting letter from employers on original letterheads or certified copies.
  • All documentation together with the required fees needs to be returned to SAIPA.
  • You will be notified of the outcome of your application within 2 weeks of SAIPA having received your documentation.

Applicants who wish to register under 3 above need to complete and/or submit the following:

  • A fully completed Accounting Technician application form.
  • A complete performance evaluation form.
  • Submit supporting letters from employers on original letterheads or certified copies.
  • All documentation together with the required fees needs to be returned to SAIPA.

On receipt of all the documentation an assessment of your performance evaluation form will be done by SAIPA. Thereafter an appointment will be made to visit you at your place of work to evaluate your competence. After the "PE" visit you will be informed of the outcome of your application to register as an Accounting Technician. It is envisaged that this process will take up to 6 weeks from receipt of the necessary documentation by SAIPA.

Affiliates who register as Accounting Technicians with SAIPA will be offered the same services as offered to our current members. This includes access to our phone in technical advisory service, technical bulletins, all publications, the members' handbook and the working paper CD file.

Accounting Technicians will be governed by the Constitution of this institute as with all other categories of membership. This includes the disciplinary and investigative procedures applicable to both members and students.

Please note that Accounting Technicians may not perform the duties of an Accounting Officer. These duties may only be performed by full members of SAIPA.
